Mats can be difficult to remove and includes the risk of nicks, cuts or abrasion due to warts, moles or skin fold trapped in the mats. After effects of mat removal may include itchiness, skin redness, self-inflicted irritations, abrasions and baldness. Mat’s left in a pet’s coat will only grow tighter, and can strangle the pet’s skin or eventually tear it open.
